Chapter 21
âIt would make our job a lot easier if we had the forensic evidence back. Even with fast tracking, it takes an eternity. That is the one thing I would change about this job, if I could, to get an immediate response from the scientists.â Alan looked sombre as he studied their evidence so far.
âAt least we have something to go on with the prints on the trunk.â Nicole raised her eyebrows.
âThe trouble is, that wonât prove that anyone is linked to the murder. True, it may give us a step forward but there is still a long way to go. We need to focus on a different angle for now. Who benefits from Stevieâs death?â
âThe only person I can see is Zoe.â Nicoleâs hands were on her hips.
âThatâs true. Itâs about time we came down hard on her. Weâve been treading carefully so far to see what information she would give us. That hasnât worked, so letâs see how she handles it when we turn up the screws.â
âShe is rich in her own right, but people can get greedy when it comes to money. Apparently, there is a life insurance policy that will prove lucrative for her now that Stevie is dead.â
âWe have found no connections to her or Stevie and the art world. There was nothing in his bank account that looked suspicious; no sums unaccounted for, for instance.â
âYes, itâs a mystery.â
âLetâs pay Zoe another visit. Sheâs staying at the Turner residence, isnât she?â
âYes, I believe so. Are you sure youâre not going over there to get Trev Turnerâs autograph?â Nicole had a twinkle in her eye as she teased her boss.
âI had never heard of Trevolution before the explosion. Rock music is not my drift. I enjoyed some of the Stonesâ music back in the day but even then, I was more of a Beatles fan and then I developed a love of classical music after learning the violin and playing in the school orchestra.â
âI canât imagine you playing a violin.â Nicole smiled.
âOh, I donât still do it, God forbid. The wife would have a blue fit if I took up playing that again.â
âSo, you donât want one as your retirement gift?â
âMercy me, no.â Alan shook his head. âIâm too long in the tooth to wax anymore violin bows.
Mitch was busy rifling through drawers and overheard the conversation.
âDo you know what you want yet as a retirement gift, boss?â
âNo, but Iâll get my thinking cap on. Maybe an album of music or something like that.â
Mitch said nothing, but they had already collected a lot more than would buy several albums.
âDo any of you like classical music?â Alan asked.
âI love grunge and Stormzy,â Nicole said.
Alan pulled a face.
âHe is another local lad, isnât he?â
âNot quite. He hails from Croydon in South London.â
The mention of London reminded Alan of his recent trip to the theatre and his wife getting targeted for her purse. He had reported the incident to the local police the next day but had heard nothing since, so doubted they had caught the culprit.
