Chapter 21

“It would make our job a lot easier if we had the forensic evidence back. Even with fast tracking, it takes an eternity. That is the one thing I would change about this job, if I could, to get an immediate response from the scientists.” Alan looked sombre as he studied their evidence so far.

“At least we have something to go on with the prints on the trunk.” Nicole raised her eyebrows.

“The trouble is, that won’t prove that anyone is linked to the murder. True, it may give us a step forward but there is still a long way to go. We need to focus on a different angle for now. Who benefits from Stevie’s death?”

“The only person I can see is Zoe.” Nicole’s hands were on her hips.

“That’s true. It’s about time we came down hard on her. We’ve been treading carefully so far to see what information she would give us. That hasn’t worked, so let’s see how she handles it when we turn up the screws.”

“She is rich in her own right, but people can get greedy when it comes to money. Apparently, there is a life insurance policy that will prove lucrative for her now that Stevie is dead.”

“We have found no connections to her or Stevie and the art world. There was nothing in his bank account that looked suspicious; no sums unaccounted for, for instance.”

“Yes, it’s a mystery.”

“Let’s pay Zoe another visit. She’s staying at the Turner residence, isn’t she?”

“Yes, I believe so. Are you sure you’re not going over there to get Trev Turner’s autograph?” Nicole had a twinkle in her eye as she teased her boss.

“I had never heard of Trevolution before the explosion. Rock music is not my drift. I enjoyed some of the Stones’ music back in the day but even then, I was more of a Beatles fan and then I developed a love of classical music after learning the violin and playing in the school orchestra.”

“I can’t imagine you playing a violin.” Nicole smiled.

“Oh, I don’t still do it, God forbid. The wife would have a blue fit if I took up playing that again.”

“So, you don’t want one as your retirement gift?”

“Mercy me, no.” Alan shook his head. “I’m too long in the tooth to wax anymore violin bows.

Mitch was busy rifling through drawers and overheard the conversation.

“Do you know what you want yet as a retirement gift, boss?”

“No, but I’ll get my thinking cap on. Maybe an album of music or something like that.”

Mitch said nothing, but they had already collected a lot more than would buy several albums.

“Do any of you like classical music?” Alan asked.

“I love grunge and Stormzy,” Nicole said.

Alan pulled a face.

“He is another local lad, isn’t he?”

“Not quite. He hails from Croydon in South London.”

The mention of London reminded Alan of his recent trip to the theatre and his wife getting targeted for her purse. He had reported the incident to the local police the next day but had heard nothing since, so doubted they had caught the culprit.
